My dream vanity is pretty much complete. There are a few things that I'm going to do more to it but for now I am ready to start using it again. Last Christmas my wonderful husband surprised me with a Vanity that he made. I guess he was tired of me hogging up the bathroom. ;p No, but really it was such a beautiful surprise. He pays attention to all the details and knows exactly what I want.
The picture below is of my vanity last Christmas. As you can tell even the before picture of the vanity is amazing and every girls dream. A place to sit, good lighting, and all the makeup I need at my fingertips makes it so easy to access.
Time went on and I really wanted to transform our bedroom. I was tired of the dark furniture we had. It just made our room more closed in and gloomy instead of bright. I didn't want to break the bank buying new furniture. So my husband and I teamed up and did a lot of DIY projects that were totally worth it.
This is the time I felt inspired to paint my vanity white. So I took on the project with the help of my husband. The yellow lights were not working for me. You want your lighting to be as close to natural lighting. I got rid of those bulbs quick and replaced them with bright white lights.
It is so worth it to make your own vanity. You can customize it the way you want. For example my husband added a nice touch with a dimmer to my lights because this type of lighting can be very bright and sometimes it's nice to dim it a tad if you have too. I've seen many that are way overpriced and you don't get that much space. The reason I love DIY projects so much is because it adds your touch. You can pass it down to your children and it symbolizes the time and effort you put into it. It has meaning and value. That's something that is pretty special if you think about it. I encourage you to step out of the box and get out and make a project. Don't be afraid to ask for help and do research on how to make your dream vanity.
I'm going to give you guys a complete run down of my vanity, what we used and where you can purchase the materials, and how my husband created it.
There are 2 pieces to the vanity. The mirror and a desk. The mirror was bought at Ross. It's just a regular framed mirror that hangs on the wall. The desk was bought off of Craigslist and it is made out of wood. The vanity light assembly, paint, dimmer was bought at Lowes and light bulbs were purchased at Costco.
How to put vanity together
1. Make sure to paint both the mirror and desk the color you desire. Strip old paint if you have too. I chose white because it goes with the colors in my bedroom and the light reflects off of it and gives me a true natural lighting.2. Bolt the vanity lights to the mirror.
3. Solder the electrical wires together with a power cord and dimmer.
4. Position desk to the desired and ideal area you would like to place it.
5. Mount the mirror above your desk on a wall. The mirror never sits on the desk but instead goes hanging.
And there you have it. All you need to do now is add flowers, vanity accessories, makeup and anything you want to make it your own. Total spent on doing my own vanity is no more than $150. What a steel! Vanity is so spacious, UBER GLAMOROUS, BRIGHT and I can control the brightness with a dimmer, and a Huge mirror space to see myself. I am one happy girl! :D

Marilu
